Frequently Asked Questions

Can any artist join?

Our aim is to promote the widest possible range of good quality original artworks relating to birds. If you meet these crtieria you can join.

Why don't I just set up my own website?

Setting up a basic website is fairly straightforward to do. But what we do is concentrate on the marketing aspect. How are you going to get lots of visistors to your website? Will they sign up for your newsletter? How do you set the newsletter up? To produce a good website takes quite a lot of effort and continuous monitoring.

You are an Artist - I am a frustrated not quite good enough artist who knows about internet marketing. I would like to suggest that you paint, draw or sculpt and leave the marketing to me.

Am I good enough?

If people have seen your work and they are saying that you should be selling it then you are probably good enough. In the end, it is the buyers who determine whether they like your work or not.

From our point of view, we offer a pre-screening service (see next question). All works are reviewed before we allow them to go on the website.

From your point of view - you have very little to lose - it does take a bit of time to set up your 'Artist details' but if you are going to sell in anywhere at all it is something you are going to have to do. You will need to get good quality digital photographs of the artwork - there is no cost involved in setting up your artworks, you pay only when the work is sold or withdrawn. See How much are the service fees? below.

What is Prescreening?

If you want to get some feedback as to whether we would be interested in the type of work, take a digital photograph of your work, write a brief description of it and then send us an email by clicking here.

We will get back to you as quickly as we can.

What style of artworks do you prefer?

Whatever style you like is the answer.

Art is more than just applying paint to canvas, it also captures something about the artist and about their subject. I feel that if you try to force a style just to make money when it is not true to your own style, your artwork will suffer.

What if I see someone has copied my work?

It would be nice to think this will not happen - but the reality is that it may.

We would like to know if this occurs - but please bear in mind that the other Artist has agreed to the Terms and Conditions in order for their work to be displayed and one condition is that they have copyright to the artwork. The dispute is between you and the other artist.

The privacy rules we apply on this website mean that if you are in dispute with another artist, we can only give you contact details of the other artist if you obtain a Statutory Declaration - see your lawyer for more information on this.

The New Zealand laws on copyright are currently under review. We will of course be subject to any changes.

How much are the service fees?

Services fees and commission rates can be found in a schedule to the terms and conditions which you will get sent to you when you sign up. They are considerably less than the 35% to 60% charged by galleries.

Why shouldn't I just use an auction site such as Ebay?

Ebay and TradeMe are very successful at what they do and it may be worth trying them out. The difference with Bird Art International is we are specifically marketing to a target audience who we think will be interested in your type of artworks through:.

We will be building up a list of potential purchasers who have expressed an interest in bird related works of art.

We will be advertising in magazines and actively publicising the website. The monthly newsleter will keep reminding subscribers to return to the website to check out what is new. When they are ready to buy that special gift, this website will be at the front of their minds.

When do I get paid?

The contract of sale that takes place is between the artist and the purchaser. Artwork International charges a service fee based on a commission rate.

You may agree any method of payment with the purchaser but we would recommend that both the artist and the purchaser use the Escrow style service as it provides a measure of protection to both parties and also allows for credit card payments to be accepted. Using this service, we will pay you within 2 working days of the purchaser notifying us that they have received the goods.
